The Great Gatsby Review
3/4 Stars
Beautifully Made But No Pay-off
I was sort of worried going into this. My English teacher had nothing good to say about the novel it was based on, and my sister was not that crazy about it either. Well, maybe the film isn't close to novel, because I really did enjoy it. However I think I would have to say I appreciated it more. I also really enjoyed the fact it's set back in the past. That made it more mysterious.
Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). He's the man. The guy everybody knows about but has never actually met, except for a few people, including Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). The story is actually set of when he is and older man, and is a reflection of what happened to him. Nick has always been curious about Gatsby, who seems to throw a huge party in his mansion every weekend. He then receives an invite to one of the parties, which is strange as most guests aren't invited. Nick goes, and is pleased to finally meet the mysterious Jay Gatsby. His whole world is thrown upside down as they become closer, and Nick's cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan), who is Jay's love, comes into play. It'll rock the worlds of everyone involved on their adventures.
One thing I really liked about this film was the love story. It was so tender, and it escalated in such a violent manner, which still was very interesting to see jn such a classy manner. Unlike today's love movies: "Hey I kind of like you", "Ok", "Oh sorry, I found someone else", "Darn!". While I liked the movie for the most part, there was an empty feeling at end, like it wasn't really worth the 142 minutes spent watching it. But that feeling wasn't enough to say I didn't like it. And Leo, if there's a time and place for you to get an Oscar, it's now. Fight for it, even if it's not this movie. Time is running out of for you.
