Spring Breakers Review
3/4 Stars
A Wild, Party-Hardy, Twisted Crime Flick With A Message
Well, it's safe to say I was surprised by this one. I can't tell you what I was expecting though. It most definitely wasn't this though, what turned out to be one of the most original movies I’ve seen in a while. From the cover it looks like your typical teen movie with girls in bikinis, having a good time, and no consequences whatsoever. Well, the last thing isn't correct at all. There are consequences to their actions throughout the movie, and some of them are not pleasant. Here's a little summary:
The story focuses on the four main girls. There's Brit (Ashley Benson) and Candy (Vanessa Hudgens) who are crazy, very promiscuous girls who don't seem to have to great of morals. There is Cottie (Rachel Korine) who is similar to Brit and Candy, but has her limits. Then there is Faith (Selena Gomez), who is very religious and well behaved, but feels lost. These girls are all friends in their college. As spring break approaches, they are all trying to chip in to pay their way to Florida. Finally it arrives, but the girls realize they are still short a lot of money. So, Brit, Candy, and Cottie become desperate and rob a building. They easily get away, and arrive back with way more than enough to go to Florida. They inform Faith of this, and while she highly disapproves of what they did, she still is eager to get away from her life for a while. The girls get a bus ride down to Florida, and have the spring break of their lives. Or so they think. One night they are all arrested when the cops catch their hotel room with drugs from a party, and send them to jail. They are surprised to learn however, that someone bailed them out. They meet the white version of Snoop Dog, Alien (James Franco), who is a criminal drug dealer. Everyone except Faith eagerly agree to roll with him. As they become more involved with him, each girl is affected individually, and shakes the foundation of who they think they are.
I can definitely say I liked this film. Not for it story, but it's messages and emotional appeal. The viewer gets to see the girls slowly crack until they are forced to confront their inner demons and insecurities. It is very interesting to see amongst the sex, drugs, and violence. While I understand people might be opposed to seeing this for those reasons, don't. It is worth to see the amazing work this film has accomplished. Great and compelling plot? No. A well-crafted character study and emotional? Absolutely.
