Monsters University Review
3.5/4 Stars
Surprisingly Heartfelt, and Genuinely Funny
"Pixar has done it again!" I am very surprised to hear myself say that. I was not expecting what I saw. I was expecting some mildly enjoyable kid’s film with just cute and lovable characters. Well, that's not accurate. The long awaited sequel to Monster's Inc. (2001) came back sharp, smart, and with just enough energy to compare to the first movie. I should never have doubted Pixar. Here's a rundown on the story:
Monster's University takes us back to when Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) and Sully (voiced by John Goodman) met. College. They both came to Monster's University with a dream of getting into the scare program and have that as their profession. Mike back then was the quiet student who kept to himself and studied. Sully was the typical jock who thought he was all it. After an unfortunate incident involving the Dean of the school (Helen Mirren), Sully and Mike are banished from the program. However, the annual scare games are coming up, and Sully is forced to work with Mike and a nerdy fraternity. Sully bets that his team can win, with the principal. She agrees to that if he does, he and his whole team get accepted into the scare program, but if he loses, he and Mike must leave the school. I realize I say this a lot, but Mike and Sully must put aside their differences and come together to get back in the program.
The thing I love about Pixar is how original they keep their stories. They don't succumb to any stereotypical plots, but fresh, fun, funny, and with many great twists. I can honestly say I enjoyed this one immensely, and had a great time. Don't label this as a dumb kid's movie like I did. You won't be sorry.
